It appears that the women of the Middle Ages were way ahead of their time! Researchers have unearthed bras in an Austrian castle that date to the 1400′s. Historians had previously believed the bra was introduced in the 1800′s–it was thought to have been invented when corsets began to lose their popularity.

The four bras found were made of linen and decorated with lace, showing that they weren’t just for functionality, but were also a source of enjoyment. Hilary Davidson, fashion curator for the London Museum, described the find as the “missing link” in woman’s underwear.
