Thursday In LA: Art, Aliens & More!

October 19, 2012 By: fohblogcreative Category: Fashion & Beauty, Trend Alert, Uncategorized

One of the perks of being an Angeleno (and working in Hollywood) is the  complete and utter lack of dull weekday nights! This Thursday proved to be no exception. When we heard through the office grapevine that our very own Senior Web Designer was hosting an art show/booksigning at one of the more famous galleries around town, we headed over straight after work!  The art gallery, La Luz De Jesus, is located inside Wacko Soap Plant, home to the most extensive inventory of pop culture ephemera in the word. With over two million items to browse, we can say with confidence we’ve never been able to leave without a bag full of kitchy presents or a plush narwal (or two!).

Opening in 1971 as a family run soap store, Wacko gradually added ceramics and leather wear (Elton John was just one of the many celebrity fans). La Luz came to be in the early ’80s and has the distinction of introducing the California genre of art, Lowbrow. If you find yourself in Los Angeles, we highly recommend taking the time to visit. And, if you are fortunate enough to be around at the beginning of the month, the gallery hosts what Details Magazine calls “the best party in town” and the admission is free. Though the store may not contain the weirdest things you’ll see on Hollywood Boulevard, it will contain the most unforgettable. Soap Plant / Wacko / La Luz de Jesus Gallery is located at 4633 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90027. Open 7 days a week.

Fabulous: 20′s Flapper + Make-Up Tutorial

October 10, 2012 By: fohblogcreative Category: D.I.Y., Fashion & Beauty

Picture this: the roaring ’20s, the age of jazz and the original “It” girl, Clara Bow. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald are making waves with their wild lifestyle, and women everywhere are starting to notice. Flappers, the unconventional, fashion-savvy ladies who won’t let society tell them what to do, are the direct result.

Foxy Flapper costume available at frederick.com.

The flapper lifestyle was fun, free-spirited and flirty. Sounds good to us! The perfect way to pay homage this Halloween? Our Foxy Flapper costume, of course! It’s the bees-knees. And since no flapper in her right mind would be seen without a full face of make-up, we found a tutorial by celebrity make-up artist Kandee to help you achieve your full potential.

More tutorials are available at kandeej.com.

Now that you’ve got the right look, it’s time to start practicing the Charleston and perfecting your shimmy! You”ll also need the right lingo to convince your friends that you’re a real Louise Brooks-y gal. You’ll find a dictionary of flapper terms compiled in 1922 here. For more costumes or to get the incredible look shown above, head to fredericks.com and live your fantasy!
