RIP Phyllis Diller
We were saddened today to hear of the loss of brilliant comedienne, Phyllis Diller. We have quite a few mementos from Phyllis in the Frederick’s of Hollywood archives, and we’d like to share them with you.
Making her debut in 1955, the 37 year old mother of 5 changed the world of comedy forever. Her signature brand of self-deprecating humor and age broke ground for both women and men alike.
An accomplished pianist and copywriter, Phyllis cemented her place as comedy royalty by appearing in 23 shows with Bob Hope and 3 full length films. She then went on to host her own show, have a stint on Broadway in Hello, Dolly! and would appear in more than a dozen other movies.
In her 2005 autobiography, Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse, she spoke candidly about her plastic surgery, stating that she’d undergone “fifteen different procedures”. Her openness about the subject provided her with a wealth of comedy gold and yet also earned her a lot of criticism.
