Thursday In LA: Art, Aliens & More!
One of the perks of being an Angeleno (and working in Hollywood) is the complete and utter lack of dull weekday nights! This Thursday proved to be no exception. When we heard through the office grapevine that our very own Senior Web Designer was hosting an art show/booksigning at one of the more famous galleries around town, we headed over straight after work! The art gallery, La Luz De Jesus, is located inside Wacko Soap Plant, home to the most extensive inventory of pop culture ephemera in the word. With over two million items to browse, we can say with confidence we’ve never been able to leave without a bag full of kitchy presents or a plush narwal (or two!).
Opening in 1971 as a family run soap store, Wacko gradually added ceramics and leather wear (Elton John was just one of the many celebrity fans). La Luz came to be in the early ’80s and has the distinction of introducing the California genre of art, Lowbrow. If you find yourself in Los Angeles, we highly recommend taking the time to visit. And, if you are fortunate enough to be around at the beginning of the month, the gallery hosts what Details Magazine calls “the best party in town” and the admission is free. Though the store may not contain the weirdest things you’ll see on Hollywood Boulevard, it will contain the most unforgettable.
